What has been your experience as an international student like?

Being an international student at Andover, it broadened my understanding of the world. Every individual has their own values; Andover also creates a space where we can share those values. I never felt like an outsider, and always felt a sense of belonging.

What are your favorite thing(s) about Andover?

My favorite things at Andover (so far) are my classes. Math classes have never been as interesting as today! Simply, math classes go much more in-depth than remembering formulas and concepts. For instance, the whole class was in awe when my instructor proved the “quadratic formula” on the blackboard.

How does Andover compare to your home?

There is much difference between the two communities; my daily life changed significantly. During breaks, talking Japanese to my friends and parents is a relief of stress. I often miss the days where I used to wake up at 5:30 in the morning to go to morning swimming practice. Going through hard practices everyday together, I reminisce about the conversations and the sounds of laughter in the locker rooms. Andover is significant different in terms of diversity. Japan tends to be monocultural in some aspects, and coming here enabled me to be involved in more interesting discussions. The weather is significantly different too! The walk from the swimming pool to Paresky Commons during the winter term was unforgettable.
